I Can Do This!

*3 Minute Read

Now that you're in control, make yourself accountable!

It's time to take ownership of your learning!

In a hybrid or online class, the responsibility for success shifts from the professor to the student. How well you do is up to you.

Start by setting your own goals and expectations, mapping out a plan, and sticking to it! Set however many alerts, alarms, and reminders you need to help you stay on track!

Find your way to make it work!

Set up your own semester, weekly and daily goals. Carve out a set time daily to work on each of your courses, and then stick to that schedule. You could set up a work schedule "as if" you were actually attending class during that time. You might even try setting an alarm to time yourself to keep yourself accountable!

As the semester moves on, you might need to give yourself bigger chunks of time to complete larger tasks, projects or reading assignments.

Remove distractions to help you concentrate. Silence your phone and place it face down so you don’t get tempted! You can tell friends and family not to bother you during certain times of the day while you are “in class.” As a reward for working, try scheduling a 5-minute break every 45 minutes (or so)  for a cell phone check, but don’t “cheat” and give yourself extra time!

If possible, having a dedicated space to study and complete assignments would be helpful. Try to be as clutter free!

If you have the luxury of having a quiet and private space to work, consider yourself fortunate and take advantage whenever you can! If not, try to find a well-lit space and comfortable space. You might need to coordinate with others around you to find the best and most mutually reasonable times for quiet work.

Once you’ve established where you’ll work, think about the when and the how. Are you a morning person? Maybe it’s best for you to get your work done early. More of a night owl? Then find a time later in the day (or evening) that works for you.

You're not alone!

Feeling overwhelmed? Trying to work but finding a roadblock? Not sure if you are on the right track? Reach out to your professor with questions so you are certain you understand what is needed to complete the requirements of each class.

Feeling isolated? Classmates can also be helpful.  Why not reach out to a few classmates to form a virtual study group?

And don't forget to take time for you!

Hybrid and online learning is hard work! It’s important to take care of yourself.

Reward yourself for small victories!

    • Get up and move around!
    • Schedule frequent and short breaks during study times so you can grab a snack or a drink, or to stretch.
    • Take a walk in the park, a trip to the gym, or any other form of exercise.
    • Not the energetic type but need to relax? Try this one-minute calming meditation!
